Art Making/Material Exploration #1: Exploring Value and The Subtractive Color Theory Blog

Color Wheel
Value Scale

1. Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.
I enjoyed creating both the value and color wheel. However i found is more difficult to mix the colors the correct way for the color wheel.
2. Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why?
I like working with graphite more because if you make a mistake you can easily erase. With the acrylic paint if you make a mistake you have to redo the painting.
3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies?
I think the most important thing about these studies is to fully understand them before you attempt them. I know that if i didn't fully understand how to mix the paints before then i wouldn't have done a good job. And if i didn't understand how use graphite then i would have not gotten the same result. Understanding studies is very important.
4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
I like to visually see the outcome of the project before i do it, so i enjoy watching the videos because then i know what is expected from me. I learned how to properly mix the acrylic paints and also how to "pick up" graphite with a kneaded eraser.

Color Emotion and Feeling

1. Describe Color and it's effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.
Color is the quality of an object with respect to light reflected by the object. Light determines hue, saturation, and brightness or darkness or a shade. Color effects our emotions tremendously; for example the color blue. Blue is said to be trusting and committed. Blue is calming, cooling and aids intuition. Green is tranquil and refreshing, it’s soothing and relaxes the mind. Yellow stimulates the mind and nervous system, it also activates memory; this is why many classrooms are yellow. It is happy and enlightening. Orange is appetizing, my dinning room is orange or for very reason. Red is enthusiastic and energizing. And purple my favorite color is uplifting and calming, spiritual and creative. Colors affect our daily lives and emotions; you may want to think about that before you paint your bedroom.

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?
Primary colors (red blue and yellow) fascinate me the most because the mixture of other colors cannot make them. They intrigue me the most because they make all of the other colors, but can’t be made.

3. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?
Feelings are hard to paint so color is used to make these emotions. June Referd uses colors to make feelings in all of her work. Rothko made artwork for the Four Seasons, but they didn’t make it. He hated it and wanted to make paintings that would make the guests feel trapped. This interested me because he knew that by using the colors he did, that it would make people feel a certain way.

4. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?
Mona Lisa is the world’s most famous painting. The smile on her is what we look at. She has a sense of individuality; she is just a person. She’s an ordinary woman who has a mysterious glow and people think she is portrayed as a saint. This has the biggest impact on me because Mona Lisa was just an ordinary woman who I obviously do not know, but the look at her face has so much meaning and emotion behind it. De Vinci painted her not knowing that it would become the worlds most famous painting, or that it would have an impact on millions who view her.

Project #1

Project #1
I enjoyed this project. This project taught me to view things differently when i was going to take the picture, and also how to view them while choosing them for this project. I felt like this assignment really helped me understand the elements of art and design. I went to the zoo this week to take photos and I also used some from my trip to Greece this past summer. My trip was amazing so i wanted to share some of my pictures.

2. I think Plato’s theory in the 4th century on aesthetics is most important because of his idea of beauty. He knows all things aren’t beautiful and that the object in which is beautiful will attract its viewers. He didn’t take into account aesthetics of art, and he didn’t necessarily like artists and poets. He didn’t write about art, he wrote about what he saw.  He also believed that art was an act of treason. He thought this because art is merrily an idea, and the object in which we call art is a copy of that idea, so the artist makes a copy of a copy. He didn’t trust poets either, he felt that they spoke of things that they could not prove to be true and he thought only philosophers new reality from illusion.

3. I think that Changeux and Ramchandrans views of aethetics are both very interesting. However i think it was hard to understand Changeuxs explanation becuase of his accent and his comparison to the brain. I like how he explained the brains emotion in art. And for Ramachandran, he tended to ramble on more then explain, But i did like his explanation on Plato and his view of things beautiful and being copys from the original Idea.

4. The readings related to the text by the explanation of aesthetics and emotion. Also the explanations on viewers and their importance in their perception of the piece of art. The text and the two speakers all explained art and aesthetics very differently, i find the text much easier to understand.

5. I think that the films were very long and hard to understand, however they did add depth to my understanding because of the different view points from each speaker. Now that i have read the text and watched both videos my view on art and aesthetics is much more clear.
